When adjusting the gloss of a water-based topcoat, film feel and water resistance also need consideration. DA-32 is easy to incorporate into water-based formulations, does not affect coating water resistance and provides good film feel in topcoats.
DA-32 is a high molecular weight acrylic polymer matting additive. It can be used as an alternative to matting materials such as diatomaceous earth and fumed silica. It has a solids content of 30–40% and is viscous and anionic, with no added APEO or formaldehyde.
Assessing Film Performance and Formulation Needs
For topcoat formulations, evaluate target gloss alongside film feel and appearance after water exposure. Compare different dosages under consistent sample preparation and evaluation conditions to select a formulation suited to the intended use.
DA-32 works synergistically with thickeners. When adjusting its dosage, monitor viscosity and check whether the existing thickening system remains suitable. It offers good overall value; assess it in relation to the actual dosage and the performance of the complete formulation.
Adding DA-32 During Initial Dispersion
DA-32 has a high viscosity. Add it directly during the initial dispersion stage and use high-speed dispersion.
Important: Add DA-32 in portions. Do not add the full amount at once.

Establishing Dosage Through Formulation Trials
Calculate the DA-32 dosage on the basis of total formulation mass, using the product as supplied. There is no need to convert the amount to a dry-solids basis. Run small-scale trials with the chosen emulsion and target gloss in mind, then assess film performance and viscosity before finalizing the dosage.
Gloss Results from a Blended Formulation
In one formulation containing 50% gloss emulsion, DA-32 was used at 1.4% and DA32EC, a companion additive for matting, at 3%. The complete formulation is shown below.
| Ingredient | Content by mass |
|---|---|
| Gloss emulsion | 50% |
| Defoamer 2410 | 0.1% |
| Wetting agent WL10 | 0.2% |
| Matting additive DA-32 | 1.4% |
| Preservative PV15 | 0.1% |
| Mold and algae inhibitor ZOE-T | 0.3% |
| Matting companion DA32EC | 3% |
| Water | 44.9% |
| Total | 100% |
Its gloss readings are shown below.
| Formulation | Gloss at 60° | Gloss at 85° |
|---|---|---|
| Without matting additive | 86 | 92 |
| DA-32 and DA32EC blend | 4.1 | 7.8 |
The blended formulation showed no whitening after one week in the water-whitening evaluation. These results apply only to this specific DA-32 and DA32EC formulation. Repeat formulation trials when changing the emulsion or other ingredients, or when using DA-32 alone.
Packaging and Storage
DA-32 is supplied in 50 kg plastic drums. Keep containers sealed and store in a cool, dry, ventilated place. Shelf life is 12 months.
